Distributed (Whole House) Audio

A distributed audio system is just that, it distributes music and entertainment in various rooms throughout the home.  The typical installation includes a pair of speakers in the ceiling wired to a “source” such as an audio video receiver (AVR), CD or DVD player, intercom AM/FM radio, or HDTV.

Speakers may be installed almost anywhere in a variety of “zones” or locations or rooms including; bedrooms, great/living room, dining, rec room, deck, and patio.  In most cases, the speakers are surface mounted, or flush, in the ceiling or wall.

Volume controls may be installed at each location in each zone or room to adjust the sound level.  Depending on the model, the volume control may be a plain knob or a keypad with IR and a remote.

A “controller” such as the Russound system shown below may control or connect all the various parts to provide a wide range of functions.  It may control 4 to 8 zones with entertainment coming from a variety of sources.
